The announcement that former justice minister Fu Zhenghua had been given a death sentence for corruption involving $16 million and a two-year reprieve by a Chinese court has prompted various responses from Nigerian celebrities. According to AAnews, Changchun’s Intermediate People’s Court in the Jilin province of northeastern China convicted 67-year-old Fu guilty.  According to the court’s decision, the death penalty may be commuted after serving two years in jail. Indicted for “taking advantage” of his position between 2005 and 2021, Fu, who held the role of justice minister from March 2018 to April 2020, is accused of accepting bribes totaling more than 117 million yuan (about $16.76 million) and “bending the law for personal benefits.”  The court reportedly permanently removed Fu’s political rights, according to the report. seized all of his personal belongings. According to the court’s decision, which was cited by the Chinese national broadcaster CGTN, “Fu’s sentence can be converted to life in prison in accordance with the law after the two-year respite for his death sentence, but no further reduction or parole shall be offered to him.” The court found that while in charge of the Beijing Public Security Bureau between 2014 and 2015, Fu had withheld information regarding an alleged major crime committed by his brother Fu Weihua.  The court’s ruling noted that “this concealment allowed Fu Weihua to avoid punishment for a long time.” It said, “The amount of bribes Fu had accepted was enormous, and he committed extremely significant crimes, causing a heavy loss to the interests of the state and people and also having a particularly bad social impact.” The court did note that Fu, who was given a “lenient sentence” because he “confessed to all his crimes and pled guilty during the investigation, provided clues for important cases, and had been cooperative in returning his illegal gains,” received it because he had served as justice minister the previous year. Adeyemi Okanlawon responded to this by writing, “This is what Nigeria needs. “My motherland abandoned the group, blocked all administrators, removed group members’ phone numbers, and burned her simcard,” stated Sandypreneur.
